A Reflection on Chapter 1:

There is a law in psychology that if you form a picture in your mind of what you would like to be, and you keep and hold that picture there long enough, you will soon become exactly as you have been thinking ~William James.
I often say your thoughts or your thinking will determine your success in life. As business owners and entrepreneurs the battlefield is in our minds. I want to take a break from our regular reading, and do some impactful work on our mind. When we begin to change our thinking we will change our lives. As you change your thinking for the good, everything around you starts to change.

Do not underestimate the power of your mind. Your mind is extraordinarily powerful. Your thoughts control and determine almost everything that happens to you. They can raise or lower your heart rate, improve or interfere with your digestion, change the chemical composition of your blood, and help you to sleep or keep you awake at night.

Over the past year, I have seen firsthand the power of "checking" my thoughts. Recently my car got stolen. In the past, I would have been angry, negative, bitter, obsessed with finding the culprit. Because I have been working on my mind and understand the power of what I speak and think, in a conversation with a friend regarding my stolen car, I simply said, well this an opportunity for me to get a better car and a new wardrobe. If you have a choice between a negative thought and a positive thought, choose the positive thought.

In order to start to change our thinking, we need to understand how we are programmed. David Hume was the first to propose the idea of the “tabula rasa” or blank slate. This theory says that each person comes into the world with no thoughts or ideas at all, and everything that a person thinks and feels is learned from infancy onward. What the adult does and becomes later is the result of early conditioning.

Perhaps the greatest breakthrough in the field of human potential in the twentieth century was the discovery of the self-concept. This is the idea that each person develops a bundle of beliefs regarding oneself, starting at birth. Your self-concept then becomes the master program of your subconscious computer, determining everything you think, say, feel and do. For this reason, all change in your outer life begins with a change in your self-concept, with a change in the way you think and feel about yourself and your world.

When you believe something to be true, it becomes true for you no matter what the actual facts may be. You are not what you think you are, but what you think, you are. Your success as a business owner is influenced heavily by the way you think.
The most important core belief you can adopt is this: “I am a thoroughly good person and I am going to be a big success in my life. Everything that happens to me, good or bad, is simply a part of the process of achieving great success.”
If you absolutely believed that you were guaranteed to be happy and successful and that every setback or obstacle was sent to you to teach you important lessons that you needed to know to achieve your goals, you would be completely unstoppable.

Thomas J. Watson said, “If you want to be successful faster, you must double your rate of failure. Success lies in the far side of success.” The fact is that the more you have already failed, the more likely it is you are on the verge of great success. Failure has the ability to lure success. If you set big goals for yourself and bounce back quickly from temporary defeat, then, your beliefs would eventually become your reality. By changing your thinking, you would change your life.
